Hi there, how can I install without it going widescreen and messing up the fonts etc. I want the textures but wanna play it how it was meant to be played and not stretched out therefore doing things like messing with my fonts. It's an NVIDIA card might be that.

In addition both the custom ddraw.dll and adjusting the resolution to actual desktop resolution with e.g. xwahacker will avoid it being "stretched out", the latter will provide proper widescreen support (whether that counts as "as it was meant to be played" I admit is a different question).

Ddraw adjusted now at the 4:3 nature intended, no stretch gagging.
But garbled font still in flights. Light cut off, is it because the hud isnt big enough now that I have a higher res?
Using a 4:3 res of 2048x1536.
What should I adjust using the xwahacker-qt?

Hi all,
I have a similar issue, with a new machine I am building (Windows 7 SP1). On a clean install of XWA (GoG Version), the game displays piller-boxed to 4:3 on my widescreen monitor, as it should. Upon installation of the XWAUP (v1.4), the piller-boxing goes away, and everything is stretched horizontally. Next, when changing the display resolution via xwahacker, the hanger and in-flight graphics adjust correctly, but the concourse (and craft database, and the briefings, etc) are still stretched horizontally. I know that these probably will not adjust to widescreen, but it would be nice to get the piller-boxing back (at least for the craft database) so that everything is not short and fat.... Not a big deal, but I was wandering if there is something I missed? Thanks!

There is a file in your XWA DIR called DDraw.cfg open it with notepad
At the top of the list you will see
; PreserveAspectRatio = 0 (no) or 1 (yes)
; When set to 0, the display will be stretched.
; When set to 1, the aspect ratio will be preserved.
PreserveAspectRatio = 0
Just change PreserveAspectRatio = 1
Now your concourse won't be stretched

^^^ Thank You!
This fixes the last of the "graphical anomolies" with my VM install of all my games. The weird thing is, they all (now especially XWA) work better inside of a Windows 7 VM on a Linux host than on a bare metal install...? Go figure...
