Problem with game crashing

So i was running the old, i think maybe 1.4 upgrade. So i uninstalled then reinstalled the game and installed the 1.6 upgrade. Afterwards i could play the game up until mission 1 battle 1, then when i go to load into the hanger the game would crash, so i used a save editor to test my game. I took me until mission 2 battle 1 for the game to load into the hanger. Then all was well until i got up to mission 3 battle 1 where it crashed again. I am unsure of what the issue is, i tried running in compatibility mode for Windows XP service pack 3 and adjusting the screen resolution/ video settings and haven't had much luck. Any ideas what it could be? I'm running windows 7, 16 gigs of ram on a gtx 970.
