triangling to infinity patch error

Hi fellows,

I've been browsing here for some time now and realizing that I am not the only one with this problem, but I have not been able to fix it.

Here are the quick facts:

Win 10
XWA Gog version
Patched to DSUCP v2.6
(Also tried with XWAUCP v1.6)
Modded to XWC 4.0 + XvT (rebel)

On startup, the error message "triangling to infinity patch is not correctly installed". Further the game proceeds to load - the cut scene is not displaying - black screen with sound. Next the main concourse scene appears. I pick something, say campain battle, after briefing the actual game loading will start, the blue bar moves an inch and then everything simply crashes to the desktop.

Note that I have gotten the TFC v2.0 mod running with no issues. Had to patch the Imperial concourse to get past the frosen start scene. Everything works, 3840x2160.

Tried XWC3.5 and XWC3.1. Both have the same symptoms.

Tried all of the above with Win8, Win7, Win Vista and even XP. The latter had other issues, but Vista, 7 and 8 all crashed quite similar fashion.

Have tried several hook replacements, ddraw versions and TgMush for expediting the cut scene not playing.

Can anyone please help with this? I don't want to give up since the upgrade with the base game and TIE Fighter mod looks beautiful and works fine with my systems.

Wasn't the fix to this making sure you had the latest ddraw AND undo/unapply the "triangling to infinity patch" in XWAhacker?

@Wotan Weave No and No it's not in XWAHacker.

@Pookie69, Looks like you've installed, something else other than DSUCPv2.6 or XWAUCPv1.6 and all the other mods you seem to have installed which shouldn't be compatible with either DSUCP or XWAUCP

Anyhow, to fix this problem you'll need XwaExePatcher download it, unzip it, copy and paste your XwingAlliance.exe into the same folder as XwaExePatcher, open XwaExePatcherWindow.exe you'll see a window look for "[Fix] triangling to infinity" it should be the top most line, then click on Restore, this should remove the error message.

copy the fixed XwingAlliance.exe back to your XWA Folder (Remember to back up the XwingAlliance.exe first)

I will give this a try Darksaber, but I also want to be clear than all of the mods and installs are physically separate and not mixed with each other. I am not sharing pilots or anything else. All versions are working fine on their own.

I even have older beta versions of the same which actually still work but are buggy otherwise.

Darksaber,

The errror message did indeed go away. The game still crashes in the same way as before. Custom cutscene still black with sound only.

We might be able to help you with the crash if you only had either the DSUCP or XWAUCP installed, with other possible MODs installed it could be numerous problems

With the cutscenes I recommend you download and install K-Lite Codec Pack to install the correct codec for the cutscene.

Sorry but I don't have Win10 installed only Win7, the correct codec should have been installed with either DSUCP or XWAUCP to play the custom cutscenes, but not being able to test the craft pack installers on Win10 I don't know if the codecs are installed correctly. This is the first I read about not being able to see the cutscenes for a long time, I know people that have either of the craft pack installers installed on Win10, but they have never reported not being able to see them.

When the game does crash can you provide a crash report

1. Go in the Events Viewer.
2. Browse to the crash event (in Windows -> Application)
3 . Select and Copy the text
4. Paste it here

Someone else maybe able to help you with the crash

As to the K-Lite Codec Pack, I had it before but updated it to the latest version. No change.

Hello,
The crash offset 000849c7 corresponds to the address 004849C7.

At this address, there is this code:

Code: Select all

:004849C0 53 push ebx
:004849C1 56 push esi
:004849C2 8B74240C mov esi, dword ptr [esp+0C]
:004849C6 57 push edi
:004849C7 8B06 mov eax, dword ptr [esi]
:004849C9 3BC6 cmp eax, esi
:004849CB 745C je 00484A29
which corresponds to

Code: Select all

// L004849C0
void PtrAdjustOptimizedPolyObject( Ptr<OptHeader> header )
{
    if( header->GlobalOffset == (int)(void*)header )
        return;
It seems that this function has received a bad pointer.

This should have not happened.
Maybe the game failed to load one OPT model.

I'm not surprised, because the Mod or MODS he has installed are no longer compatible with either the DSUCP or XWAUCP

These Mods you have installed, probably tell you you need the DSUCP installed, but they require a different version of DSUCP, over the years I've updated the DSUCP to include different craft.

The mission included with the TFCv2.0 may require different opts to be installed that are no longer available in the craft packs, so when you load a mission, the mission looks for these opt, can't load them so it crashes.

It will be the same problem with XWCv3.1, XWCv3.5 and XWCv4.0

All three require you to replace the XwingAlliance.exe, if you replaced this over the DSUCPv2.6, you've buggered up your game up right there.

Please read carefully, THESE MODS ARE NO LONGER COMPATIBLE WITH DSUCPv2.6 OR XWAUCPv1.6, these MODs are now over 5 years old, some are 9/10 years old and way out of date, the person who made these MODS is no longer around to keep them updated.

If your game keeps crashing, you can only blame yourself for installing these MODs in the first place, without the understanding of editing the game correctly, you'll have problems each time.

Question: Is XWC (any version) overwriting xwingalliance.exe? That would be a compatibility hard stop right there.

Darksaber: why don't you continue to host the old craft pack versions - with notes that they are no longer supported, so support requests will be ignored - so that these older mission packs that are based on them can at least still be used with the opts, graphics, etc. that were current at the time?

Darksaber,

I understand what you are saying and echo the sentiments of keiranhalcyon7.

Like I mentioned, I have another set of the mod with YOUR older version working fine, but you have stopped hosting anything older than your current version.

Please don't lay blame on me installing other mods which all worked in the past.

I appreciate what you offer to the fans like myself but please don't ridicule us for not understanding the editing process, which many of us are not deeply familiar with.

I simply came here to see if something that used to work for me and doesn't now, could be fixed. It is clear that it is not a compatible combination. However, I do not have access to your older files which used to work with the mod I am trying to play.

Thank you for your work and attempt for helping me.

May the Force be with you.

Got home, looked it up; the answer is yes, it is overwriting the exe. So no hooks will work, causing modern opts to crash the engine, among other issues.

That said, DSUCP2.6 contains all the necessary ships for XWC; I think a bit of rework on the missions could remove the need to edit the exe (using the opt replacer hook to insert the death star models for the few missions that need them).

So is there a chance that we will have access to the older versions of DSUCP once again, with the proper dislcaimer, to test out and enjoy the combinations with the mods that would work?

Doesn't seem like too much to ask?

Hello,

To install XWC 4.0 + XvT (rebel) on top of DSUCP v2.6 or XWAUCP 1.6:

Don't replace:
FlightModels\Equipment0.lst
FlightModels\Spacecraft0.lst
Fronttxt.txt
Resdata.txt
Shiplist.txt
Specdesc.txt
Strings.txt
TGSmush.dll
XwingAlliance.exe

Copy the XWC files (except the above files) in your XWA directory.

Add the following lines to Resdata.txt:
Resdata\XvTB3.dat
Resdata\XvTB2.dat
Resdata\XvTB1.dat
Resdata\XvTT8P.dat
Resdata\XvTT2P.dat
Resdata\XvTT1P.dat
Resdata\XWCYSS.dat
Resdata\XWCTOD5.dat
Resdata\XWCTOD4.dat
Resdata\XWCTOD3.dat
Resdata\XWCTOD2.dat
Resdata\XWCTOD1.dat

Manually install the Death Star OPTs using MXvTED.

Use BinHexEdit to set the mission number as indicated in the XWC Readme.

Install the lastest hooks and DDraw.dll.

Install a DivX MPEG-4 Video (DX50) codec to play the videos.

Thanks, Jeremy.

I was thinking about possibly repackaging XWC to streamline all of that, reworking the death star missions to use the opt replacer so MXvTED steps aren't needed to get the DS opts, maybe adding super backdrops, etc. What would I need to do, in terms of trying to contact Waylon, etc., in order to be kosher for rereleasing / building upon his material?

He doesn't seem to respond to emails so God knows, I am sure he would want his mods to live on not just be stuck in limbo forever.
