I talked about that some time ago. In the meantime I tried a lot to fix this problem myself but I can't find the problem.
The problem is that in XWA the soundoutput doesn't work as it should. The samples are played with an inferior quality and not as they sould be.
I didn't have this problem under WinME. I happened to me when I installed XP (new installation, not an update). Maybe some of you say "this hasn't to do anything with XP" but I doubt that.
Last sunday I formated my HD and reinstalled WinXP. The first thing (before installing anything else) was trying XWA. The sound was bad as always.
I can give you an exsample. The samples are of the german version. (In the game the soundquality is set to normal, not to low.)
Here is the original sample from the CD: http://www.wsh.salzburg.at/mknormal.wav
And here is a 1:1 record from the game: http://www.wsh.salzburg.at/mkingame.wav
I hope you can hear the difference. To my system:
The most important thing is (I guess) my soundblaster. I use a Creative SBLive! with the newest XP drivers. I have also a SB16 for DJing in my system (also with the newest drivers). My onboard SB is disabled.
When I switch over the soundoutput from my SBLive! to the SB16 I get the same results. So I think this isn't a driverproblem. Maybe DirectX but I guess it's something else.
Also in Windows I notice a problem. When an application (which uses sound, like FruityLoops or a game) is open, all background sounds (like ICQ, windowssounds,...) sounds also very very bad (same quality problem as in XWA).
All other games work fine. It's just that thing with the sounds of the background applications... But my main problem is XWA.
Has anybody out there an idea? I would be glad if I don't have to buy a new SB...
------------------
~BF~
[This message has been edited by Igma (edited 18 January 2002).]

have you tried switching which port your speakers are attached to? I found that when I switched them to a different port it worked.... (using a SBLive! as well)

I'm not quite sure if I understand what you mean. Which port do you mean? The output of my soundblaster card? Or is it something with the software?
------------------
~BF~

I know, I sound stupid, but I still don't know which (or what) port you mean. The place where the card is pluged in my motherboard or the place where by speakers are pluged in?
There are two on the card itself. The green one (front output) and the black one (rear output). I use only the front output because I only have two speakers (this is also set under the speaker settings of the liveware).
Did you have the same problem as I?
------------------
~BF~
[This message has been edited by Igma (edited 19 January 2002).]

Right now I've notices something strange. Before I reinstalled WinXP it didn't make any differences if I use my SBLive! or my SB16, the quality of the sound was always the same (=bad).
Today I tried it again to use my SB16 for XWA instead of the SBLive! and it worked! The sound is ok! It seems that my suggestion was wrong. But I have the newest drivers for the SBLive!! Could it be some kind of conflict?
And I'm not happy at all. When I use the SB16 as my primary sounddevice the windows sound is crappy all the time, not only when another application is open which uses sound. But then XWA works as it should! I don't understand it...
I'm going to try what happens when I put out my SB16. Maybe then everything is fine...
---
Ok, that didn't help anything. But I noticed one more thing:
It seems that when a programm like Winamp uses the same soundblaster than windows does (it didn't before because I use my second SB for Winamp, I just tried what happenes when I switch it) there is a conflict. Then the windowssound sounds crappy. So Winamp has a higher priority than the windowssound. When I start XWA the windowssound sounds like it should and XWA is crappy. There the windowssound seems to have a higher priority. So the main problem seems to be that there is only one "channel" which sounds clean (=ok) and every other application which wants to use the same SB gets a "channel" of minor quality.
What could be the reason for this? I can't imagine that I'm the only one with this problem!
---
And once again I formated and reinstalled everything. But before that I removed everything from my system which I don't need. What was left is HDs, DVD/CD-ROM&Burner, graphiccard, SBLive! and networkcard.
I installed XP and again the first thing I did before trying anything else was testing the sound. And it still doesn't work...
I'm going crazy now! I tested XWA with two other systems, nearly identical to mine, and there it worked! Damn...
The next thing I'm going to try is taking the SBLive! from a system where it worked and replacing mine. Maybe this helps...
------------------
~BF~
[This message has been edited by Igma (edited 19 January 2002).]
[This message has been edited by Igma (edited 19 January 2002).]

Alistair, are you still there? I still don't know what you mean with "port"...
(Sorry for not editing my old post but I wanted to point this question out clearly)
------------------
~BF~

the audio jack on the back of the card (you should have 4 jacks on the back of it)... but yes it could be a conflict caused by using both cards in the computer at the same time... check your IRQ's in your BIOS... if you have the option to change teh IRQ for your PCI slots make each one different so they no longer conflict with each other.

There are 5 jackes (SBLive! Player 1024):
Front out
Rear out
Mic in
Line in
Digital out
In which jack did you plug your speakers?
It's also no IRQ conflict. I checked everyone. I can't assing every single one in my bios but that's not necessary.
I don't think that there is a problem with the second SB because when I reinstalled everything there only was the Live! SB and it also didn't work.
There are only two options left:
-There is something wrong with my bios (wrong settings, but I couldn't imagine which one)
-There is another conflicht with my hardware (motherboard, networkdevice, graphiccard, but also there I can't imagine what I could do)
I'm really desperate. I don't know what I should do next. Next tuesday I'll get a new SB Audigy for testing. Maybe then everything works as it should but I'm really afraid it won't.
If everything fails I'm afraid that I have to go back to ME even if I don't want to.
------------------
~BF~

Woohoooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After trying 4 soundblasters, 2 graphiccards, 2 networkcards, 2 mainboards and much problems I finally discoverd the root of my problem!!!
Man, if I only found it before... It was too easy!
In WinXP, there is an option to set the conversion quality (under sound and audiodevices, speakersettings, advanced). It's on max. when you install XP. Well, I switched it off and suddenly it worked!
I hope this can help some of you too...
------------------
~BF~
