Holy crap!

I already checked the Wookie long ago, but thanks so much for this other link! I don't know how you found this, but I hope you didn't spend too much time looking for it. (OK, so it doesn't cover Tour III, but still a great find.) I apologize it's taking so long to show something, but real life's been giving me a very hard time. Have no fear though. Something will be coming soon.

I'd like to announc sth for Waylon:
He's working on his own parallel project: X-Wing Conversion. It's missions are more like the original ones. Whoever wants to help, inform Waylon or me.

This project is just converting xwi files from English version of XwingCD into XWA mission files. I had those files as I was "translating" Redux briefing. Untill recently, crisger and I discussed about fine-tuning those files and adding things Redux didn't include, then turn out to be a project. Here is my progress so far:

1. Adding missions which Redux didn't include such as T3M13-14, bonus and training missions.
2. Adding introduction cutscenes for each tour of duty which Redux didn’t include.
3. All mission pictures has been replaced via XWA Dat Customizer.
4. Traning, bonus and tour I missions testing done, tour II in progress, Fek'LeyrTarg is testing tour III.

We need help for testing Tour IV and V, there are 24 missions each. Main job is to rebalance them. Adding backdrops will be a plus, some hit-and-run missions will require adding another region, there you might want to construct an environment for rebel secret base. It really depend on how much time you have and how nice you want your missions look like.

Well, anyone want to help, please pm Fek'LeyrTarg or me. We will give you necessary files.

Wait a minute, so does this mean there are two different versions of the project going on at the same time with different ways of going about this? I get that you want to replicate the missions as they are in X-wing, but then you mention rebalancing. I haven't actually played the Redux campaign, so I'm not sure how the mission balance is.

Does this mean you are no longer working on getting the music working FLT?

We plan on doing historical combat, bonus missions, and implementing cutscenes. I don't know if we can do a version of the proving grounds. I also intend on having someone do original mission pictures, but that's something that can wait. Some of these things seem like they overlap with Redux's goals. Am I right?

Would someone please clarify for me what's going on?

I played all Redux missions they are all well balanced, I have to give credit to Redux team they did a great job.
The only difference between these two projects is the source of mission files, I'm generally focus on conversion only.
Historical and bonnus missions, cutscenes and mission pictures... those stuff Redux didn't include, please feel free to use them if you like. So does FLT's music work. We are actually sharing your work not overlaping.
The best part for this conversion is death star missions, and nick volunteer to fine-tune T3M14. I'm expecting his work.
Please do not think us as competitor, we are just eager to play Xwing mission sooner.

Re: X Wing Redux in English?

Postby Benevolence on Sun Jun 21, 2009 11:05 am

Well I'm finally here after a bizarre run of bad luck trying to register on these forums. For the longest time I could never get a confirmation email and then when I finally did I got a COPPA email for children 13 or under(?). I can at least now respond to quetions and inquiries on these forums now.

Someone had emailed me about recording the MIDI files for wing using a Roland SCC-1 or something similar. What I plan to do is more elaborate than that. X-wing is probably my favorite game of all time next to Tie Fighter and it was also the very first game I ever experienced with General MIDI back when I got my SCC-1 back in 1994. When the X-Wing collectors edition CD-ROM came out I was agast that they recorded the MIDI music using the mediocre AWE32 patchset and ever since then I've really been wanting to redo the music. What I can do is much more than just record the SCC-1 - I intend to tweak, edit, and remix (meaning rebalance, pan, and normalize the MIDI files) so that they sound fuller and more like a real orchestra yet still maintain the sound and feel like the original Sound Canvas tracks. I doubt you will find anyone with the time, expertise, and equipment to do this project like I can (pro bono that is).

If you want to hear what the end result will sounds like I did the same thing for the Dark Forces MIDI tracks and you can hear a sample of them here (35 Meg download):

http://darkforces.jediknight.net/downlo ... _suite.zip

Speaking of which, being part of the Dark Forces MOD taught me that organization is key for a successful completion of a project like this. After reading this thread there seems to be many people with various ideas/intentions and no one to orginize/coordinate those efforts. Fek'LeyrTarg has been the one in contact with me and seems to be in charge. Perhaps a project thread clearly defining project members and who is doing what would help.

Which brings me to: I need to know what music needs to be done. Besides inflight music are the cutscenes, menu, takeoff/landing sequence music going to be used/needed? What about the intro cutscene? Let me know.

Also someone had mentioned breifings. I have the voice talent and equipment to do those well if that is still needed.

That's it for now. Good to finally be on the forums!

Re: X Wing Redux in English?

Postby EtherShock on Sun Jun 21, 2009 6:22 pm

I see, so all you just want to play the missions already? Well, I guess I can't blame you for that. Good things come to those that wait though.

I and DTM are the project leaders. FLT contacted you because he is in charge of music, and he's done a great job by garnering your interest in the project. I'm busy with getting initial translations done when real life isn't beating the hell out of me. I would really like to setup a site for the project, but when I do have time for the project, it goes towards translation. Jefe and darkpadawan should also be working on translation, but I'm the one tweaking it as I go along.

That's great! We need voice talent, especially for the briefings. However, voicework will be one of the very last things added, as things could change from then to now, and we wouldn't want you to have to rerecord anything for the sake of a minor change in script. Would you mind sending DTM and I a sample of your voicework?

Your work on the music for the Dark Forces Mod is amazing! It feels as you said, like there's an orchestra playing this, the way it should be! I can't wait to play that mod. I'll have to get Jedi Academy just to check it out. I know each of the DF themes has subtle variation with each recurrence in the game on different missions. Did you do those as well? I understand the files are in MP3 for the sake of transfer in this case, but I don't know if XWA supports only MP3. If it supports other formats, is it possible to do it in something better than MP3, such as a lossless format like FLAC or uncompressed like wav? If we have to do compressed, OGG/Vorbis has the best quality. How long have you been playing? Do you primarily play piano/keys or do you play other instruments as well?

We need music for inflight, cutscenes (once they're enabled) briefing, debriefing, and the concourse musics. I think that's all. Oh, and feel free to embellish on the music. Ever since I acquired the midi files for TIE Fighter, I realized how much work was put into it. When I go back to X-wing, I notice how basic the music is compared to TIE Fighter's now, so if you've got the musical chops, put your own spin on it, but don't go flying off the handle with interpretation. We still need to recognize this is the music from X-wing we're listening to. Make it involved like TIE Fighter's though.

Jefe messaged me about creating a work site, where we can exchange information and files easily, but I haven't heard from him in a long time. I have no idea where he is, but when he shows up again, I will ask him to set this up. It should make communication between everyone much easier. Would someone like to lend us some web space by any chance so we could setup a website?

Just found a way to enable custom briefing voices under Reduc (or XWC) without patch exe.
I'm now playing XWA via vitural clone drivehttp://liveconsult.co.uk/freeware.aspx it's a freeware, so that I don't have to bring CDR everywhere. therefore, you will have a XWACD2.iso file, all you have to do is "copy" wave file in specific directory, it will work.
1. use UltraISO or other ISO tool to update XWACD2.iso
2. Copy enitire directory which contains voice files you added onto the [clone drive]:\Wave\frontend\ for example a directory name B8M1 correspond file name 1B8M1*.tie in mission directory.
3. Wave file has to be orderd correctly, for example B080102 means first sentence of 1B8M1*.tie briefing audio file and B080103 is the second.. etc, "S...." is commander briefing, "H...." is hint, (not supported in XWA) "W..." is win debriefing.
4. After you update your XWACD2 iso file, you are good to go.
It seems I will have to rename most part of missoin file name.

Wait a minute, hints? They were originally going to have voiced hints?

Yeah, copying over the files will override the disc, because the game checks for the files first on your hard drive and if they're there, it uses them instead going to the disc. Of course, if you've got an image mounted, it's essentially the same thing as having the CD, but this is an excellent suggestion. Now you don't have to have the whole image mounted, just what you need.

Hmm...if you guys are doing historical combat, we may have to decide on their placement, so we don't have to renumber things later on. I think they should come first. They are meant as training after all. Do you concur?

Tie Fighter have voiced hint, Xwing do not have it, even hint text comes after Tour 3.
XWA.exe will not check hard drive first unless patched (Try to run TFTC without launcher you will see), patching exe might get side effect. So far XWA with DSUCP upgrade has been tested well for custom missions start from slot 61. So I rather keep it un-patched.

Historical combats were all done,as I wrote Redux "trnalstion" (with Death Star missions) pack. The mission sequence from XWC setup is X-W, Y-W, A-W training, then T1-T4, B-W training, T5, bonus. I created a pilot named XWC to start game after A-W training finished, so training battle will be optional. Fek'FeyrTarg constructed another pilot waylon that allows you to play all missions for testing. Please go to my ftp site download the pack named XWC.rar. Please also download mission(update for audio).rar repalce mission directory and XWCTOD01.data, XWCTOD5.dat file override files in RESDATA.

As for mission pictures, there still room for improvement. I just randomly picked few images, if anyone interested about this, please let me know, all images have to be in bmp 256 color format, battle picture is 510X260, two types of mission pictures one is 100X75 for mission icon, another one is 260X260, currently I'm using mission summary images captured from XwingCD for these.

No, I thought you were referring to XWA, not X-wing. Yeah, that's the order I was going to put them training and tours in, as that's how I usually play through the game (and the way you're supposed to go through it) but it would definitely be a good idea to give people the option of skipping them if they'd prefer.

No, it doesn't check the hard drive? Hmm, I always thought it did. Then again, I suppose mine's been patched ever since XWAUP released its first opt.

I was going to find someone to do mission pics, but I'll leave that to you since it seems higher on your priorities. It's not something I will get to till the main parts of the project are completed.

What I'm talking about is voiced briefing, xwa designed to check audio files from CD only. And the patch relate to voices is TFTC patch, if you run TFTC without using its launcher, you will heard original xwa mission briefing voices. Somehow that launcher will re-direct system to search audio source from hard drive.

The voice files are all in TALK directory of XwingCD, file extension is p01, p02... I was searching over the internet looking for how to extract wav files out of that but didn't get any hint. If someone know how to do it please let me know.
The worse case is to use FRAPS to extract motion picture and convert to wav file out of that. That will requires technique to remove background engine noise, it will be another painful job. Might be easier if jurst record our own since we need outsourcing for commander briefing anyway.
I know there is clone trooper's voice changer on sale, not sure if there is Ackbar's voice changer. Or this is something Benevolence or Fek'LeyrTarg can do it easily. I mean record your own voice and conver into Ackbar or Dodonna's voice.

How could I forget that the briefing voices are in the talk folder of the cd? :kopfwand:
Ok, whatever.

Waylon, you can open and convert the talk files using audacity. Here are two examples.
Btw the language which Ackbar and Dodonna use here is german. And the files are from the mission "Capture Ethar I and II"

Ohh OK, yeah, the briefing audio is located in the "talk" folder for XwingCD.

A skilled audio engineer could modify a person's natural voice to sound different with a few filters, probably definitely doable for Ackbar, but Dodonna might be a bit tougher or not possible. The briefings don't always have to be done by Ackbar or Dodonna. In the guide, they never actually reveal who briefs the pilots, so it could be anyone. The briefings I've been translating aren't identical to the ones from the original game though.

Thanks for Fek'LeryTarg's hint, I think the next trailer can include voiced briefing we added recently. Players can choose briefing voices from Ackbar or Dodonna's. It's almost finished, should be released soon.

Not sure if you know about this http://amiralaria.free.fr/xwam_an.php
You can do multiplayer game for all mission files, Fek'LeryTarg and I tested it. It's actullay not so complicated after all.
Unfortunately, XWA TCP/IP can't work behind a router, nor Vista (DirectX10). I posted this question looking for a fix but no reply yet.
You will have to by-pass your router and get host's IP via msn or skype, like we did it for XvT (modem) long time ago.

I don't know...I haven't shown anything yet, maybe once I do we can, but I don't think it's good to stir up interest when I have nothing to show yet. Maybe DTM will have something else to say though.

Btw, are you guys enhancing historical combat at all? Cause if you're not, I'd like to do that with the briefings and messages at least. I don't know the first thing about actual mission editing. That's DTM's department.

I added planet backdrops in closer view, tried to keep is as original as possible. You can reference the trailer from Dunfun64, they were taken from my conversion. I open up XWC2.0beta version for testing. Here is the download link:
[fixing bugs] Dodonna voice files is in different link: http://www.sendspace.com/file/n6wsc2 due to file size. You can find everything you need there. Fek'LeyrTarg is working on Ackbar's voices and rebalancing Tour III.
Some missions are very hard. I just double up warheads, 200% shield and try to make through by skill. That's when the fun begins. There are lots of good missions there, with all audio briefing, it's really great. Enjoy it!

revenge of the disappearing text

Postby Danfun64 on Fri Jun 26, 2009 3:02 pm

when i install the xwc 2.0, all my text dissappears, at first i thought it was that my xwaup changes had something to do with it, so i copied the stuff lost from the config from the xwaup modified to the xwc (i have backup) but that didnt change, can you post a fix, and if its remove xwaup but keep ucp (i installed remaining craft not installed from ucp) ill accept that, but first can you please give me a fix other then that? ty

edit, tested without the extra xwaup craft, still same, :kopfwand:

can anybody help me :regenschirm:
