Greetings all,
I would like to start off by saying that I find your X-Wing Alliance Upgrade to be a very facinating and exciting project. One which I would, eventually, like to be a part of. Unfortunately, I currently don't know the first thing about editing a game of this type. If any of you can spare a minute to explain some of the basics, such as "What programs can be used for the 3D Mapping, Texturing, and so forth?", it would be greatly appriciated. All I need to know is what constitutes the bare-minimum needed to edit the crafts of XWA and mabey a few tips on how to get started.
I thank you for your time and look forward to hearing from you,
Netherwulf
Some basic information and links to sites with utilities at http://www.btinternet.com/~jmdare/
Any 3D program that can save a DXF can be used to model, but most people use Rhino3D at some stage.
Any paint-package that can save a BMP can be used for the textures, but Photoshop is popular and Fireworks is what Decoy uses and so based the tutorial here on.
Either ACE or OPTech can be used to make the OPT. ACE is the older / original package while OPTech is the one that is still being developed. Which you prefer is a matter of your choice.
Either BHE or MXvTED can be used to install the new OPT by editing the EXE. BHE also requires some work with Notepad, but again which you prefer is a matter of your choice.
Good luck.

Thank you for your fast reply to my questions. They were exactly what I needed to know. But, I have a few more that I need answered, if you don't mind.
First off, You said that most people end up using Rhino as their modeler. But, I recently checked their web-site and after seeing the $800.00 price tag on it, I decided that Rhino was not the modeler for me. I did, however, download the evaluation verion of it, but it is limited to only 25 saves, and I'm not sure whether or not I can simply uninstall it and then re-install it again to get more save or, alternately, transfer the models created on Rhino to one of the crappy 3D programs I downloaded from ZDNet, in order to save it. Any suggestion on a "cheap" 3D modeler? I would like to stay under $60.00, if possible. I don't like spending more than 3x what I payed for a game, just to edit it.
Second question: I have seen a good bit of info and tutorials on how to make OPTs and textures, but how do you make a Cockpit? Is it also a BMP image?
Again, I thank you for your time and patients,
Netherwulf

I said most people use Rhino3D, I didn't say most people used a legal copy.
I don't know myself how to get around the save-limit, though hypothetically speaking I may have noticed a date-limited demo at one of the 3D modelling sites (unsure which one) which theoretically could be used by setting your PC clock back to October 1998.
Cockpits in XvT and earlier were just pictures but in XWA they are "just" a third OPT file to go with the Exterior OPT (shown in the external view for the fighter you are flying) and the base OPT (shown for other fighters).
[This message has been edited by JM (edited 01 April 2001).]
