For years I have been pursuing this project, without ever being satisfied with the result. But now it's different … :D

Image

These are the first OPTs that make up the Death Star. As you can see, the central disk, the equator, the superstructures, the towers are still missing ... but the most is now done!

Image

In the final version some of the mashes created by Hernan many years ago, and never published, will be included. This will be my tribute to an XWA pioneer, who unfortunately disappeared one day from the web.

Image

I hope you too are eager to see the Death Star in the game! ;)

Looking good so far DTM!!! Kind of reminds me of the 'original' Death Star, at least the textures do on the surface, which George Lucas used when the X-wings and Y-Wings were approaching (close-up). You can actually see the difference in the textures if you look closely.

This looks pretty amazing, however the laser dish looks far too big! This is just my opinion but I think it should look something more like this:

Q's got a point, now that I look at it again. I'd say the dish would need to be some 25%ish smaller. Also, are you going to include that "inner" ring within the dish? The DS2 dish is pretty much plain and featureless but the DS1 ring has several layers as you can see in the pic above. It doesn't look to be a movie shot but is fairly accurate to the original.

You have to remember perspective, the xwa image will have been taken relatively close while the film shot is far away.
When close you only see a smaller % of the surface - distorting the surface details, while far away you get to see up to 50% without distortion.

Trev is right.
Proportions of the model are ok. There is a visual distorsion.
I will finish the model, than share it to beta testers. If they say the dish looks to big in game, I will remodel the dish...

Holomessage A-01: Galen Erso to Saw Guerrera
Saw, if you're watching this, then perhaps there is a chance to save the Alliance. Perhaps there's a chance to explain myself and, though I don't dare hope for too much, a chance for Jyn, if she's alive, if you can possibly find her to let her know that my love for her has never faded and how desperately I've missed her.
Jyn, my Stardust, I can't imagine what you think of me. When I was taken, I faced some bitter truths. I was told that soon enough, Krennic would have you as well. As time went by, I knew that you were either dead or so well hidden that he would never find you. I knew if I refused to work, if I took my own life, it would only be a matter of time before Krennic realized he no longer needed me to complete the project. So I did the one thing that nobody expected: I lied. I learned to lie. I played the part of a beaten man resigned to the sanctuary of his work. I made myself indispensable, and all the while I laid the groundwork of my revenge.
We call it the Death Star. There is no better name, and the day is coming soon when it will be unleashed. I've placed a weakness deep within the system. A flaw so small and powerful, they will never find it. But Jyn, Jyn, if you're listening...My beloved, so much of my life has been wasted. I try to think of you only in the moments when I'm strong, because the pain of not having you with me. Your mother. Our family. The pain of that loss is so overwhelming I risk failing even now. It's just so hard not to think of you. Think of where you are. My Stardust.
Saw, the reactor module, that's the key. That's the place I've laid my trap. It's well hidden and unstable, one blast to any part of it will destroy the entire station. You'll need the plans, the structural plans for the Death Star to find the reactor. I know there's a complete engineering archive in the data vault at the Citadel Tower on Scarif. Any pressurized explosion to the reactor module will set off a chain reaction that will destroy the entire station.
I'm not a strategist, but I believe that a well-coordinated attack by Alliance forces can lead to the destruction of the Death Star. Even a single single-seat fighter can make the difference. A description of the Stardust project follows. If you can understand how it was built, you will also understand how to destroy it.

Image

The Death Star is a mobile space battle station built by the Galactic Empire in order to strengthen its terror regime. The Death Star is the size of a small moon and its main weapon is a huge superlaser cannon capable of destroying a planet in a few seconds.
The Death Star has the appearance of a huge sphere of dark gray color, with a sort of crater in the northern hemisphere, inside which the station's super laser is housed. The surface is protected by a dense mesh of turbolasers and driving radios; these defenses alone are able to develop a volume of fire equal to more than half of the entire imperial fleet.
Since the laser cannon network is designed to hit medium and large ships, the station is home to hundreds of TIE squadrons and numerous other military and transport ships.

Image

The “Death Star OPT shipset” is a set of objects created for the X-Wing Alliance simulation, which reproduce the main features of the Death Star. The main body of the battlestation is composed by eight quarters of a sphere, with a radius of approx. 26 Km, plus an object for the central structure. To complete the functions of the battle station, it's possible to add multiple antiaircraft defense systems and two targets for the destruction of the Station
The base muster of all textures have been created by Hernan in 2004.

Image

The surface of the station is divided into 2,048 sectors, with different structural characteristics. Most sectors are composed by habitable superstructures. The surface antiaircraft defense is scarce: each sector has an autonomous laser system, with a maximum of 5 rotating turrets. This is because the armor of the outer surface is invulnerable to any known weapon.

Image

The space station has four main hangars, which can accommodate transport and medium-sized combat cruisers. In addition to these, there are another 25 hangars for short-range TIE fighter squadrons and long-range Assault Gunboats. Each hangar houses an air force equivalent to that of an Imperial Star Destroyer. The hangars are all located within the equatorial trench.
Hangars have been created by Hernan in 2004.

Image

Inside the Death Star is mainly hollow. The entire structure is designed to protect the central cylinder, which conveys energy through the central regulator, to the main weapon of the Death Star.
The energy regulator is the only weak point of the Death Star. By destroying the regulator, the enormous energy accumulated in the poles would make the sphere explode.
There are two ways to reach the central regulator. The first is well known by the Empire: it consists in flying through the structure to reach the core of the station. The entry point is inside one of the small hangars. You fly through the main warehouse and the shield generator, to get into the core compartment, where the power regulator is located. Obviously this road is very well defended by hundreds of Hunter-Killer droids, programmed to destroy any fighter you try to approach the central nucleus, whether they are aggressors or imperials. The Empire does not intend to take any risks.
The internal structures and the Hunter-Killer droids were created by Hernan in 2004

Image

The second way to destroy the Death Star is currently unknown by the Empire; it is a design flaw, thougt up by Galen Erso and described in the "Stardust" file, an encrypted message for Saw Guerrera.
One of the reactor vent ducts has been magnetized to allow a warhead to reach the power regulator without exploding along the way. To destroy the power regulator, a small fighter is able to fly inside a surface trench and launch a torpedo inside the duct.

Image

The trench runs through the entire southern hemisphere, from the equator to the pole. Galen Erso wanted to facilitate the flight of the aggressor fighter, opening a maintenance tunnel that allows the target to be reached more quickly. Unfortunately Erso is unable to guarantee that the tunnel will be kept open by the imperials.

Image

The target to hit could be protected by defensive turrets. Galen Erso had no control over the design of anti-aircraft defenses, so not much information exists on the matter.
A precise blow to the exit hole of the duct will trigger a chain reaction that will destroy the core of the Death Star. We trust in the Force, so that the Empire does not realize how dangerous the magnetization of the duct is.

WOW, this is amazing DTM! The amount of effort far exceeds what I expected, from the trench to the interior, this is awesome!

DTM.... OMFG!!!!! (sorry for the language... ) This is ' AWESOME!!!!' such detail, this is amazing. Sorry guy's.. I really couldn't give Hernan's opt to anyone... He asked me not to give it to the general public..(well.. I kind of gave it to 3 or 4 people who I thought would know what to do with it.. but that was then, this is now!) DTM's Death Star looks totally different to me. Well done sir! And you're right Hernan really did pave the way for people like you ... I am trying to find the right word.. how about 'Upgrade ?' :D on the work he did. From what I can see the over-head view of the trench looks fantastic!!!

Note: DTM... in the picture above, when you are showing the attack run... , is it 'Trunch' or 'Trench' ?

Note 2: DTM.... Correct me if I am wrong... Is a 'Trunch' when a area is slit off into 2 to 3 areas? I've never heard of that word be before I thought you made a mistake (my bad...) but I did look it up, and it is a word. I am just confused on the meaning.... Not trying to get off topic though...

Sincerely, Rogue518

There is no definite information in this regard: the last animation of the briefing would seem to suggest the north pole, but it could be turned upside down. I chose the South Pole for functional requirements of the OPT.
