I'm playing on a mostly stock asus x202e (ca. 2013?), which has these specs:
Intel Core i3 (3rd Gen) 3217U / 1.8 GHz
4 Gb ddr3 sdram (1333 MHz)
Intel HD Graphics 4000
Given those limitations, what can I reasonably hope to get away with as far as mods in the megapack go?
What can I get away with in my install?

I guess another way of asking this is:
What is the order of "weight" in the install, i.e. which effects/graphics elements are most taxing?

The new special effects can tax some areas but you can customise or turn them off.
Your PC spec isn't amazing but even the best computers have trouble with this older game these days.
Just try it and see how you get on.

Thanks Ace! I just didn't know if it was helpful to try shadows or dynamic cockpits but not bloom or something like that. I'll keep tinkering. Having Babu Frik sure makes it a lot easier to tinker with, thanks for that!

You may want to choose FSAA over MSAA.
The Dynamic Cockpits aren't much of a FPS drain I think.

I disabled anti-aliasing entirely, Vince, as I thought they'd be a drain. I still haven't really flown with any of it (just loaded xwa prologue.1 and launched the ship). Probably will get some fly time tonight or tomorrow night to tinker some more.

I made some space on my SSD and reinstalled XW, TF, and XWA directly on my laptop and messed with the settings a bit. XWA is still rather laggy, but TF is running much better (with occasional crashes). I may just stick with vanilla XW and TF (with the ddraw file, that seems a must!) until I get onto a computer with better hardware (who am I kidding, I'll probably keep tinkering here and there).
