Just to clear up any questions...
Modeling
OptED won't have features to create or edit your model in any way as that should be done in your model program. I can not build model editing features that would be any good nor do I want to.
That is not as bad as it seems, this is an example of steps that you could take to get around it.

Open your model up in your CAD program (eg. Rhino)
Make the neccassary changes
Save the model
Export the changed bits to a new file that you can import into OptED (this gives many advantages)
Import that file into OptED
Setup the new parts in OptED the same as the old ones (shouldn't take too long)
Delete the old part from OptED

TextureingThe first releases of OptED will include no texturing support except changing a whole texture or palette. You will be able to setup advanced transparency but really that should be done in the CAD program too. This is aimed at those people who make and texture their models completely in a CAD program and is the easiest and best solution if you can do that.
Later releases of OptED will include basic textureing support but don't expect it to be amazing. This will be for those of you who are not able to apply textures to your models in your CAD programs, like in Rhino.
[ 20 September 2002: Message edited by: Bios Boy ]

Excellent, maybe this community will be dragged kicking and screaming away from the dark days of dxf for good.

I have completed the code that imports an Obj's materials, which could include bitmaps or transparency bitmaps. Illumination bitmaps will need to be added manually as there is no tag in an Obj material that supports this.
Part of the Obj material code required me to start building a texture screen, I have gone on to improve this and it doesn't need much more work. After error checking the material code, I think I will try to finish this next then go back to the Obj importing code and complete that.
Although the Obj importing code is there it does need tweaking so that it imports straight into the opt structure as well as updating the user interface.

cool!
So are you saying, that at some point in the future, you can take a fully textured 3d model, import it into OPTed (or whatever), and there it will be, readt for hardpoints and refining touches? Thats great!

he is saying that, if in your modelling program you apply the textures and export as OBJ, you can import it into OPTed fully texed... at least that is what I believe he is saying. And I think it'll be in the first release!

Yes I am saying that !
In the first release of OptED you could import a fully textured Obj and then just click Save As Xwa Opt... or Save As Xvt Opt...
If you set it up in the Obj then in OptED you wouldn't need to setup the textures or transparency. Of course to do this you either need these features in your CAD program or you need another program to do it. Lets just say that Rhino can't setup an Obj completely but programs like Max Studio can. Possibly GMax but probably not too well.
For now if you wanted hardpoints or engine glows then you would need to set those up in OptED but I may come up with a way so you can do these in your CAD program too.

YYYYYYYAY!
Sometimes being optimistic payes off!
Oh yeah, another minor quibble:
When you select multiple hardpoints, select a face, then press SET TO FACE, OPTech only sets on of the hardpoints to face! Can you fix this in OPTed?
Also, please could you call the different hardpoints what they are called in MXvTED to avoid confusion?

Hmm.. Okay, I don't know how useful this may be to some people.. It would only really apply once full texturing capability is put into the program. Would it be possible to add a feature that would allow you to select all the faces in a model, or mesh, that use a specific texture? Say, select the texture, and click a button, and all faces using that texture become selected. I don't quite remember all the circumstances, but many times I've accidentally de-selected all of the faces I was working on, and wanted very badly to be able to select them all again quickly.
Or, maybe a simpler thing to do would be to add a selection lock, so that you wouldn't lose the faces/meshes/whatever you selected if you clicked off of them by accident.
What? LOL! Sigs are for losers!! I wouldn't be caught dead using a sig!

Azza: If I allow multiple hardpoint selection in OptED then moving them all to the same place will move them ALL. I am NOT going to name the hardpoints based on someone elses program! I will however be naming the hardpoints after what they show up as in the X-Wing Alliance game. If you wanted your own custom naming then you could edit the .dat file that will come with OptED.
Hawkeye1: I will give the selection thing a thought. I did have an idea a while back about being able to save your selections so you could recall them later but I havn't decided if I will use it.

Might as well give it up, Bios. "It's not a modeling or texturing program" couldn't be hammered into the brains of these people if their lives depended on it. Just work your magic and hope they catch on before time's up.
